Compass Mining Becomes First Sponsor of Synota's "Impact Mining" Initiative, Converting a Portion of Bitcoin Hashrate to Support Healthcare and Renewable Energy in Neglected Communities in Nigeria.
May 21, 2025 – In a groundbreaking move to combine blockchain technology with sustainability, Compass Mining – a leading provider of Bitcoin mining infrastructure – has announced a partnership with Synota to support healthcare and energy initiatives in Nigeria through the "Impact Mining" program.
The initiative opens a new direction for the cryptocurrency mining industry, converting a portion of the hashrate – the computing power used to mine Bitcoin – into funding for essential services in underserved areas. Specifically, the hashrate revenue donated by Compass Mining will be used to cover the electricity costs of Olobiri Hospital and Ozuzu Village – a solar-powered community.
The power of technology for public health
Olobiri Hospital, which sees around 3,600 patients a year and has assisted in the birth of over 34,000 babies since 2010, is now able to save on its electricity budget and reallocate it to essential medical supplies. Meanwhile, in Ozuzu Village, over 150 households and a school have benefited from a 20% reduction in energy costs – a significant step in increasing access to technology and boosting local economic activity.

“This is not just hashrate, this is hashrate with heart,” said Paul Gosker, CEO of Compass Mining. “We believe that profit does not have to come at the expense of positive social impact. This initiative is a clear demonstration.”
From technology to charity: a replicable model
Austin Mitchell, CEO of Synota, said the “Impact Mining” initiative is designed with global scalability in mind, allowing miners around the world to participate by donating a small portion of their hashrate. In addition to the obvious humanitarian impact, this donation can also provide financial benefits through tax deductions in many jurisdictions.
CJ Burnett, Chief Revenue Officer of Compass Mining, asserted: “Even a small fraction of the global hashrate can make a big difference for thousands of people. This is a testament to the intertwining of Bitcoin mining and community development.”
Conclusion: Bitcoin Mining with Social Responsibility
With the cryptocurrency industry under pressure regarding energy consumption and sustainability, the “Impact Mining” model opens up a new direction – where decentralized technology can be intelligently integrated to create positive, concrete and lasting impacts for the global community.
Compass Mining and Synota hope that this initiative will be the beginning of a wave of collaboration between the blockchain industry and sustainable development goals, shaping a future where cryptocurrencies are not just speculative assets, but also tools to empower the underprivileged around the world.
